- Creation of Arnold Wesley Standfield (1901-1990), the founder of A.W. Standfield and Co., 'Supreme' Mouse and Rat Traps.
TAKEN FROM 'TRAPPED IN TIME' ARTICLE BY SOUTHERN COURIER NEWS:-
Mascot was once home to the Southern Hemisphere’s only mouse trap factory. The unique establishment on Baxter Rd was owned by Wes Standfield and operated from 1943 until it closed in 2000.
The factory’s supreme mouse traps were known across Australia. The homemade mouse trap making machine, which stood at the heart of the factory, intrigued visitors. Designed by Mr Standfield and constructed from second-hand parts, it changed little in 57 years of operation.
A marvel to look at, it’s on display at the Powerhouse Museum’s Discovery Centre at Castle Hill.
You can also pop down to Mascot Library and Museum to see a collection of products and photographs related to this special factory. Among the artefacts is the choker mouse trap, also invented by Mr Standfield.
Nicknamed ‘the family finisher’, it was designed to trap four mice and create “no blood, no noise”.
